Maharashtrian Vatana Usal!
This is a perfect dish for morning breakfast.
Vatana Usal is a classic recipe, where in dried black/ green peas are cooked with onions and tomatoes and the spice level is aggravated with the ‘Meeshna Goda Masala’.

Pav, Hot Puris, Rotis & Rice
Ingredients:
- Dried black/green peas
- Vegetables- tomatoes, onions, ginger, garlic, curry leaves and coriander
- Oil
- Salt
- Mustard and Cumin Seeds
- Asafoetida
- Meeshna Goda Masala
- Meeshna Turmeric Powde

All you need to Prepare:
- Soak the peas overnight
- Finely chop the onions and tomatoes
- Soak the lemon sized tamarind piece to prepare its pulp
Steps to make the authentic Maharashtrian Vatana Usal:
- Cook the peas until soft in a pressure cooker (3-4 whistles)
- Take a pan to heat the oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves and asafoetida
- Add ginger garlic paste
- Add finely chopped onions
- Add finely chopped tomatoes
- Add salt, Meeshna Turmeric Powder, Meeshna Goda Masala and tamarind pulp
- Add water, as per the desired consistency
- Let the mixture cook for 2 minutes
- Now, add the cooked peas
- Simmer for 10 minutes
- Garnish the Vatana Usal with finely chopped coriander leaves
Your Vatana Usal is ready to serve!
